A Newbie Guitarist

Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you’ll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you’re gonna be rewarded.
Jimi Hendrix

For one of my 2011 resolutions, I promised myself that I will try to learn the guitar. As most of my friends play the guitar, I thought to myself it couldn’t be that hard. I managed to obtain one, a beautiful acoustic instrument I must say; a dark and elegant red colour.

As of now, I wish I was born with longer fingers and acquire a skill for patience. It took me hours to finally realise how to tune a guitar by using online videos and resources; I very much like to thank YouTube users for posting their guitar skills. What comes next is the hardest part, learning and practising. I always thought that my fingers were long enough to play the guitar. I never believed how much finger stretching you had to do. Oh the pain of playing a guitar. However, I must proceed; who knows how long this will take me, but I’m sure this will be worth it!

  1. Good for you for trying to learn guitar! My husband decided to follow through on a life-long desire to learn guitar and he taught himself how to play five years ago. He now plays in a small band and writes a lot of music. He proved to me that it’s possible (with lot of diligence and determination) that you CAN indeed teach yourself how to play guitar.

So naturally, being a lover of music, I decided to try to learn how to play guitar too. Sadly, I didn’t meet with much success. I would have to say that my downfall was that I didn’t want to learn as badly as he did. Passion and the desire to succeed will probably weigh very heavily in your overall success with any pursuit.

So I can relate to your woes over feeling like your fingers are too short or too slow, or not calloused enough …. yet! I played daily for about 5 months, then I put my guitar down when I took up photography and never went back. I even took lessons for a few months, but I didn’t really resonate with my teacher and so I didn’t miss it when I stopped. Now photography …. that’s a whole ‘nuther thing! I can hardly bear it if I don’t take a picture or two every day!

So I guess it’s all about passion: where your passion is, your heart (and success) will be!

Good luck with your playing and try to keep taking photos, too!

  2. Playing the guitar is so good! It’s not like I play perfectly, but I try to make some sound qith it, he. I don’t think it’s that hard, and it is a lot of fun.

Good luck with it and don’t give up!

Oh, and thanks for your comment on my blog! 🙂

  3. Awesome! Ive been playing for about 5 years. Learn the chords of E, A, C, D, G, F, F#, Em, Am, and Dm. Those are the most basic, although F and F# are barre chords and are kinda hard to play.

Its true that practice makes perfect though. Try some Jack Johnson and some Zac Brown Band songs(may not be your cup of tea but theyll help you learn). If you can read chords or tabs, go to . And if you need any help or any advice, hit me up! Id be glad to help.
