One Saturday Afternoon: The Last Days of Summer

England would not be England without the rain. As darkness falls across the sky, the last of the summer days eventually comes to an end. How did you spend your last summer days?

That Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to be at the beach. These days, I am always trying to find ways of escaping London. What better way to spend your day than soaking up the last of the summer sun at the beach, whilst holding an ice cream cone. To be precise, I was situated on the south coast of England, Barton-On-Sea. In the distance, beyond the glittering sea, lies the Isle of Wight.

As I look out of my window now, rain is falling heavily across London. The blustery wind is howling once more. Farewell summer, we shall meet again next year.

Gone!
Gone, till the end of the year,
Gone, and the light gone with her, and left me in shadow here!
Gone-flitted away,
Taken the stars from the night and the sun from the day!
Gone, and a cloud in my heart, and a storm in the air!
Flown to the east or the west, flitted I know not where!
Down in the south is a flash and a groan: she is there! she is there!

  1. Very nice, thank you for taking us to it. Being a Romantic, I love the rain. However, where I am it seldom raids so it is a welcome change. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live in London, but I have lived in a very Rainy Climate when I lived in Eugene Oregon for some 9 months. It was the first of two times that I lived in Eugene, and the first time was miraculous. As someone who had just begun pursuing Film Making, and as it turned out, Writing, the weather played a key role in my Creative undertakings, and Inspiration.

Back to your question, how have I spent these last Summer Days. As it were, I’m currently staying not to far from the Ocean, and so I do get to enjoy it’s many Breezes and Mists as they come over the near by Hills. As I have recently begun pursuing my Writing again, I have been in quite a bit, but I do wander out to our deck to watch the Sun Go down. The weather has been in the 80’s to 90’s lately, and being I am a lite weight when it comes to heat, the A/C has been on some 60% of the time.

I will miss these summer days, more so the nights, but Fall and Winter are truly my favorite seasons, so I look forward to my Craft during these times.

    Lovely Post, Thanks Again

I envy people who live so close to the sea. It’s truly beautiful in the summer. I especially love the salty smell of the sea. I too am looking forward to Autumn (Fall) and Winter, preferably with less rain.

      Thank you again!

  2. Oh I wish I lived in a cooler climate. I am absolutely dying down here in the southern US. What rain we get is brief, violent, and leaves the outdoors feeling like a steam bath. It’s suffocating.

Beautiful pictures. I spent the last days of summer getting settled into a new house. I prefer your experience!

  3. Hi noirciplume, you meant the whole of Britain did you not 🙂 about our summer weather, what summer.
Here in Northern Ireland we had our summer during April with a few sunner days since.
We live about 10 minutes from the sea but very seldom go near it, its to cold.

  4. Oh no, I wouldn’t. I’m not here by choice. I was dragged down here, kicking and screaming, by my husband. I want to live in the Northeast–cool (for the most part) and lots of rain. The thing I hate above all others, is sweating, er, perspiring. 😉

I often say that spring and summer is my favorite time of year. But really I love autumn also so much. I look forward to it just as much as I do spring. All the colors, the energy in the air, and the crunchiness of leaves. Makes me feel like traveling.

  6. So glad I found you. We are hoping to travel to England next summer to visit friends. I have wanted to visit England since I was a little girl…

How did I end summer? With a great weekend at my sister’s vacation home in California. Only a few hours from our homes, my family gathered there to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday. It was a great weekend of cool weather, lots of laughs, and time spent together. A perfect ending to summer.
